Cultivating Equanimity for Healthy Living in the Modern Age
Equanimity is about finding your center when life gets rocky. It’s that steady, centered feeling, even when everything around you is upside down. Keeping your cool helps you make better choices, get along better with people, and just feel good in general. Practices like mindfulness, meditation, and yoga build this inner strength. Keep at it, and soon you’ll be handling life’s surprises like a pro. That calm headspace? It’ll be your go-to move when the going gets rough.
Understanding Equanimity in Yoga
Ancient yogis knew how to keep calm in chaos. The Bhagavad Gita warns us about letting desires and ego control our minds. Patanjali, the yoga guru, said yoga is taming the mind, as expressed in the sutra ‘Tada Drastuh Svarupe Avasthana’ (YS 1.3) – meaning ‘the seer rests in its true nature’. These teachings point to equanimity as a path to inner peace. By practising this balance, we find that quiet place within. It’s discovering your true self, the part of you that remains steady amidst life’s storms.
Patanjali outlines five stages of Chitta (the mind), which include:
- Kshipta – Full of energy but going nowhere
- Mudha – totally zoned out
- Vikshipta – trying to focus but gets easily distracted
- Ekagra – focused
- Niruddha – perfectly smooth and still
These stages illustrate the journey toward achieving a controlled and balanced mind—a journey that yoga facilitates.
Kshipta – The Restless and Agitated Mind
In Kshipta mode, your mind is racing through different ideas, worries, and desires. Focusing on a single thought seems impossible. Yoga poses (asanas), breath control (pranayama), and meditation help to slow down.
Mudha – The Stupefied and Dull Mind
You’re sluggish and foggy in Mudha mode. Stress, and lack of sleep, may be behind this mental hangover. Sun Salutations and energizing breathwork help you shake off the mental fog and feel alive again.
Vikshipta – The Distracted Mind
Your mind is in Vikshipta mode when you are multitasking, trying to watch your favourite show while scrolling through your phone, answering emails, and cooking dinner. This scattered focus makes it hard to concentrate on any one thing. Practices like Trataka (staring at a single point) help you learn to focus on one thing at a time. Deep meditation protects your mind from distractions. Mindful breathing grounds you in the present moment.
Ekagra – The One-Pointed Mind
Ekagra means being utterly focused. You’re reading a book or watching a movie, and time stops. You’re completely present. It’s achievable in meditation, yoga, or everyday tasks needing concentration. It’s about training your mind to zero in fully. This intense focus can be cultivated in various settings. Dharana (sustained concentration) and Trataka (candle gazing) are workouts for your mind that build mental muscle to stay focused. The result is Increased productivity, creativity, and a deeper connection to yourself.
Niruddha – The Controlled Mind
It is that rare moment when your mind becomes perfectly still in total peace and tranquillity. Reaching Niruddha requires dedication, discipline, and years of practice. It’s about taming your mind, not controlling it. This isn’t suppressing your thoughts but understanding them without being carried away. A state of pure awareness, where you’re connected to something much larger than yourself. It’s the ultimate goal of yoga. Every meditation session, every deep breath, brings you closer to this state of pure bliss.
The Need for Yoga in Modern Life
